The Secretary of State's offices have issued an alert warning new business owners to be wary of misleading solicitations from "California State Corporations". This fraudulent mailing includes an official looking seal, states that the new entity has not yet obtained a Certificate of Status, and requests that they submit a completed form and $49.50 by a certain date.
Reputable service companies can request Certificates from the State directly on your behalf, but the Secretary of State is the only entity authorized to issue legitimate Certificates of Status.
For more information on the State's response, to see samples of the misleading mailing, or if you've received/replied to one, please visit the State's response website
